A little bit about Tesla

Tesla, Inc. was first established in 2003 by founders Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, whose aim was to be “a car manufacturer who is also a technology company”.

Named after the famous electrical engineer and inventor, Nikola Tesla, the company is headquartered in Palo Alto, California. The company has grown from relatively humble origins to become one of the highest-profile organisations not only in Silicon Valley but across the globe.

Billionaire Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla since 2008, is the person perhaps most synonymous with the name Tesla. Although not one of the original founders, it was his 2004 investment of $6.5 million that earned him the title of chairman of the board of directors.

The first Tesla model, the Roadster, was subsequently produced in 2005. This went into full production three years later in 2008 when 147 cars were sold – a small beginning that would bear fruit in the future.

As more models were introduced, there became a need for bigger production facilities. The Toyota plant in Fremont, California was bought in 2010 and renamed the Tesla Factory.

To cope with increasing global demand, Tesla has since gone on to open factories in China, Berlin and Texas. Expanding their production base has gone hand-in-hand with growing their global reach.

In 2020, worldwide sales of their cars reached nearly 500,000, the same year that the one millionth Tesla rolled off the production line. This same year, the company achieved its stated goal of producing half a million cars in one year across the four models in its fleet – a staggering achievement in under two decades.
