Driving in and around London

London’s road system is huge, expansive and, for such a large city, relatively easy to negotiate. Running for some 120 miles, the M25 orbital motorway circles the entire city and means you can access far-flung areas without having to travel through the centre itself. It also has numerous connections, whether you want to head north, south, east or west, to the suburbs or to cities on the other side of the country.

The city centre can be busy, as you’d expect, although things have improved markedly since the introduction of the congestion charge. If you enter central London in peak hours, you’ll have to pay the charge. If you’re not aware of how it works, we’ve made a handy video that will introduce you to it. You can find it on our main London page. Be aware that the inner London ring road, which consists of various roads, forms the boundary of the congestion charge area, but itself isn’t part of it.

When driving in the centre, be aware of the lanes reserved for buses and cyclists – there are huge numbers of bikes in use in London.

Connections to other part of the country are numerous. The M4 heads west to Bristol, the M3 south-west to Winchester and Southampton. Take the M20 for the coastal towns of Folkestone and Dover, while the M1 is the huge motorway that bisects the country, going through Luton to Northampton, Leicester, Nottingham, Sheffield and Leeds.

To ensure maximum coverage, you can get van hire in London at the major airports, train and stations, at business and retail parks. We have multiple Ikea, Costco and B&Q van hire centres across the capital so that you can shop, load up your van, unload at your destination and then drop it off at a place that’s good for you. Explore our list of pick-up location to see just how close we are to where you want to be.
