Driving in and around London
Key motorways in and around London
- M3 – links the south-west of London with Hampshire and major cities such as Southampton, around 80 miles away.
- M4 – travels west out of the capital and connects London to counties such as Berkshire and reaches South Wales via Reading and Bristol.
- M25 – a 117-mile motorway circling the capital, the M25 is also known as the London Orbital Motorway, which links to several motorways that take you out of the city.
- M1 – heads north through Watford before passing through cities including Leicester and Nottingham, before joining the A1 (M) east of Leeds.
Main roads in London
- A406 (North Circular) – central ring road connects Chiswick to Woolwich via Wembley, Brent Cross, East Finchley, Edmonton, Walthamstow and Stratford.
- A205 (South Circular) – runs through the south of London from Woolwich to Chiswick. It forms a full loop with the North Circular via Eltham, Catford, Dulwich, Clapham and Battersea.
- London Inner Ring Road – is a 12-mile route, made up of many main roads and encircles Central London, forming the boundary of the London congestion charge zone. However, the London Inner Ring Road itself is not part of the congestion charge zone.
Congestion Charges
Congestion charges are not included in the cost of your van hire in London. The congestion charge is a daily charge if you drive in the congestion zone 7am-6pm Monday-Friday and 12pm-6pm Saturday-Sunday and bank holidays. You may also need to pay a ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) charge in certain areas.
How to get to…
City University of London
The main university campus can be found on Northampton Square to the north of the River Thames in Clerkenwell. The best way to reach it is via the A501. Most accommodation is within a five-minute drive of the campus; the furthest being Eleanor Rosa House, which takes around half an hour via the A11.
Imperial College London
The main Imperial College London campus is just south of Kensington Gardens. Take the A3220 or A308 towards Cromwell Road. The Kemp Porter and Woodward Buildings halls in North Acton are the furthest away from campus, around 20 minutes along the A40 Westway.
Royal Holloway University
The main campus can be found near Englefield Green, around 20 miles to the west of London. Exit the M25 at junction 13 and join the Egham Bypass heading south to reach the campus. All undergraduate halls of residence are within a five-minute drive of the main campus.
UCL
The main University College London Bloomfield campus is right in the heart of Euston, next to Euston Square Train Station. It’s easily accessible from the A400 and Euston Road. The main halls of residence are about a mile from campus. Max Rayne House is a bit further out, taking around 10 minutes to reach using the A400 and A503.
B&Q Chiswick
B&Q in Chiswick is just off the A406 and is also a 24/7 Hertz van hire drop-off and pick-up point here. It’s best accessed via the Great West Road (the A4) and then the A406 after the roundabout. It’s also a convenient place to pick-up your vehicle, as well as any furniture and equipment from B&Q.
