After the United Kingdom leaves the European Union, and dependent on the outcome of the UK government’s current negotiations, customers from the UK may need an international driving permit and extra documentation to drive in Europe after 31 October 2019. These guidelines provide further details.

For UK driving licence holders travelling to the EU and EEA

  • If there is no EU Exit deal, UK driving licence holders may need an International Driving Permit (IDP) in addition to their UK driving licence to drive to EU and EEA countries after 31 October 2019. The type of permit you will need depends on the country where you intend to drive and whether you have a UK photocard or UK paper driving licence. Full details can be found at: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/driving-in-the-eu-after-brexit-international-driving-permits. If an IDP is required, it can be obtained from the Post Office for a fee of £5.50.
  • Please contact us on 020 7026 0077 ahead of your travel if you intend to drive one of our UK registered vehicles to Europe after 31 October 2019. The reason is that we need to provide you with a vehicle on hire certificate (VE103B), GB sticker, and vehicle insurance Green Card, unless you have your own insurer, who will then provide this Green Card to you.
  • For further information about visiting the EU after 31 October 2019 if the UK leaves the EU without an EU Exit deal, please visit: https://www.gov.uk/visit-europe-brexit
