Philadelphia is a beguiling combination of historic heritages and the thoroughly modern, with early landmarks of the War of Independence alongside 21st century skyscrapers. With so much to take in, hiring a car is the perfect solution to help you get around and see all the best sights.
Discover old Philadelphia
Before the American Revolution, Philadelphia stood as the country's biggest city and became the natural choice as the capital. Today you can wander the Independence National Historic Park in the heart of Philadelphia and see the 18th century buildings that helped form the United States today. Amid the trees and gardens you’ll also be able to see The Liberty Bell, which rang to commemorate independence and Independence Hall, where the new constitution was signed. There’s also a museum depicting the life of early statesman Benjamin Franklin and an authentic tavern from the 1700s.
The eye of the artist
The steps leading up to the Philadelphia Museum of Art has become an essential tourist sight for visitors thanks to the Rocky film series. These are the steps that underdog boxer Rocky Balboa runs up in the six different hit movies and most visitors can’t resist doing the same. You can also find a bronze statue of Rocky at the foot of the steps to commemorate the iconic series.
Of course, this does distract from the museum itself but, when you finally get inside, you can get your breath back by admiring the collection of paintings dating back to the Renaissance period. Highlights include masterpieces by Renoir, Picasso and Cezanne. There’s a wonderful collection from the Chinese Ming Dynasty as well as modern American art and photography. Look out for contemporary pieces on the streets – especially the giant plug.
Eat your Phil
Philly’s Reading Terminal Market has grown to become one of the city’s most popular attractions and one of America’s best-loved food markets. The former railroad station is now a vast complex of homemade food stalls, fresh produce vendors, and street food counters. It’s fun to wander around and take your pick at what claims to be the longest operating farmer’s market in the US.
For fans of Italian cuisine, head to the south of the city – Mr. Martino's Trattoria is a particular highlight, with Brigantessa being a must for meat lovers. But for an authentic Philly-cheesesteak, John's Roast Pork is the place to go. You can’t leave the city without trying one, although the locals all have their favourites – look out for Sonny’s and Pat’s King of Steaks too.
The perfect place for a city break, make the most of a visit to Philadelphia by hiring a car and taking in this historic hotspot in all its glory.
