Denmark's third largest city, Odense stands on the island of Funen between Jutland and Zealand. If you have hired a car in Odense you'll note that it's 1 miles southwest of Copenhagen along the E2 motorway. Odense also has a busy harbour, important railway links and its own airport, Hans Christian Andersen Airport on the northern outskirts. Funen is known as Denmark's 'garden island', with gentle rolling fertile countryside. One of its top visitor highlights is the magnificently moated Egeskov Castle. It is surrounded by what is considered one of the best gardens in the world, has a classic car and bike museum, a forest adventure playground and a Segway driving course.
Odense Zoo is Funen's most popular attraction, with a wide ranging collection of more than 2,000 creatures. Visitors who hire a car in Odense can tour all the city's attractions. It's a busy historic city built around a river, canal and fjord. Other tourist highlights include the remains of a Viking castle on Nonnebakken Hill, the medieval Saint Canute's Cathedral, the lively Brandts Passage area of galleries, clubs, bars and restaurants and the mock Renaissance city hall. Odense was the hometown of writer Hans Christian Andersen so you'll find his birthplace, childhood home and school are among the many sights linked to his name.
