Bakki stands in a remote spot on the southwest coast of Iceland, and its small airport is mostly used for short-haul flights to the off-lying Westman Islands. You can reach the Westman archipelago by flying from Bakki or taking a local ferry. The flight of course, is much quicker – only six minutes in fact. Hiring a car at Bakki Airport means you can explore the south coast area easily. The F253 runs straight from the airport to join the main Icelandic Highway One coastal road. In the other direction it leads to the nearby ferry quay for the Westman Islands.
Bakki Airport has mostly rural surroundings, with only a small number of farms dotted around this flat windswept treeless area. There's a small ferry pier for travellers to the Westman Islands down at the beach known as Landeyjohofn – but in case of bad weather conditions, the ferry must divert to Thorlakshofn, a site further west which is better sheltered against the weather. Hire a car from Bakki Airport and you can use Highway One to drive to the capital Reykjavik, which is only 80 miles north - or a journey of just over an hour and a half.
