The small town of Skagastrond stands on flat land on the east side of the Húnaflói bay between two peninsulas in the north of Iceland. The capital, Reykjavik is 17 miles south. Behind the town stands the distinctive peak of Spakonufell mountain, which reaches over 2,1 feet above sea level but can be easily walked via footpaths. From the summit, the views over the bay are renowned. It's an area famed for its bird life and unspoiled scenery, and Skagastrond forms a handy hub for guided tours of the area. Visitors who rent a car in Skagastrond can drive around the Bay area easily and they'll soon find the island's main arterial road, Route One, is about seven miles south.
Skagastrond is a busy fishing community with modern seafood processing factories. If you hire a car in Skagastrond it's easy to tour all the local sights; these include the striking modern white church, painted low-rise houses and functional Kalfshamarsvik lighthouse. There's a tourist information office, golf course, swimming pool, sports centre, shops and places to eat. The Kantrybar café hosts live music events and the Djasn og Dulleri is a classy local craft store. The quirky Museum of Prophecies covers the legendary prophet that was supposed to live on Spakonufell - today the museum staff will try to tell you your future.
