This small single-runway airfield serves the town and region around Egilsstaðir along the east coast of Iceland, mainly with flights to the island's capital Reykjavik. The airport stands just a mile to the north of the town alongside the River Lagarfljót, in a flat part of the river valley. There's a modern terminal building and plenty of free parking outside. If you pick up a hire car here you'll drive straight out of the airport onto Iceland's main coastal road, Highway One. This will either lead you down into the town or take you back towards the west and the distant town of Akureyri.
The road straight from the airport is highway one, the main connection road through the country. It'll take you straight into the town if you're hiring a car from Egilsstaðir Airport. The community itself fits in with the largely flat landscape in the immediate area, with the buildings being low-rise. The visitor highlight is Minjasafn Austurlands, a museum in town documenting the history of self-sufficiency in the homes of in the east of Iceland. Further afield you can find Hallormsstadaskogur, Iceland's largest forest, and the Lagarfljót's wide valley, including the dramatic 420ft high Hengifoss waterfall. Drivers can also enjoy the famously scenic ‘Öxi' mountain road to the remote village of Djúpivogur.
