The port city of Bordeaux is located on the banks of the Garonne River in the Gironde department in south-west France. It is the ninth biggest city in the country and is the capital of the historical Aquitaine region. Bordeaux is situated in close proximity to the European Atlantic coast and is divided into two parts by the river.
Thanks to its rich heritage, part of the city has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site so there is plenty of history and architectural brilliance in this beautiful city. Hiring a car in Bordeaux will enable you to explore the town with ease and discover just why the city is known as “La perle d'Aquitaine”.
Bordeaux has been classed as an important “City of Art and History” and you really are spoilt for choice with over 300 monuments to visit, (Paris is the only city in France which has more). To begin your trip, head to the stunning Esplanade des Quinconces, which is the largest square in Europe, before wandering around the historic area of Saint-Pierre. Be sure to spend an evening at the magnificent Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux, which is home to the Opera Nationale de Bordeaux as well as theatre productions and musicals.
If you've got the time and want to take in some sea air, hire a car from Bordeaux and take a trip over to the popular coastal city of Biarritz on the Bay of Biscay.
