Key motorways in and around Cardiff

• M4 – is the main motorway that serves Cardiff. It begins west of the city, on the outskirts of Llanelli, and travels east toward Bristol, continuing past Bristol, Swindon and Reading. The M4 is also the main route toward London.
• A48(M) – is two miles long and connects Cardiff to Newport. It begins as the A48 road, which travels just north of the city centre and runs through the northeast corner of the city. It provides the main link from Cardiff city centre to the M4 motorway, which can be joined at Junction 29.

Main roads in Cardiff

• A470 – anyone wanting to drive off in the direction of Pontypridd or Merthyr Tydfil will need to head north-west along the A470. This then carries on to Brecon and beyond.
• A4161 – this provides a quick route through the city centre passing both the castle and Cardiff University.
• A4232 – another way to reach the M4 from the city is via the A4232. It begins near Cardiff Bay before going west and joining the motorway at Junction 33.
• A48 – running through the centre, this offers a direct route to the city’s main hospital as well as to Cardiff Metropolitan University.

Cardiff IKEA

To the south of the city, in the Cardiff Bay area, you’ll find your local Swedish superstore, located on Ferry Road. It’s easy to reach if you take the A4160 south from the centre, crossing the River Taff via Penarth Road Bridge. Take a left onto Clive Street and make a right onto Ferry Road to arrive. Ferry Road and Cardiff Bay retail parks are both also nearby.

Cardiff University

Cardiff University is located right in the heart of the city, in the Cathays Park area, and is well signposted. The A4161, which runs from east to west through Cardiff, offers easy access to the university campus. Handily, this road will also take you to many of the student residences that are within 15 minutes drive from the central campus.

Cardiff International Airport

lights to most continents and regions, including Africa, Asia and Australasia, take from Cardiff International Airport. Both the A4226 and the A4232 will provide direct routes to the country’s major airport from Cardiff, which is only around a 30-minute drive southwest in your hire van. Drop off spots are available near the terminal, while short and long stay parking is available across the facility too.

Cardiff Metropolitan University

The city’s second major university can be found towards the northwest of Cardiff in the Llandaff area. The A48 runs alongside the campus and makes it very easily accessible for both students and parents helping them to move in or out of the accommodation there.

Cardiff B&Q Culverhouse

Across in the Culverhouse Cross district, to the west of the city, you’ll find our location at Cardiff B&Q Culverhouse. It can be found on Cowbridge Road and is around 20 minutes away from the centre. Simply take the A4232 from the Cardiff Bay area and travel west, past Llandough and Leckwith to reach our rental desk and the superstore.
