Driving in and around Cardiff

Whether you’re a local of the area, moving into the city or helping a loved one move for university, Cardiff is an easily navigable city. And while public transport is regular and reliable in the city centre, hiring a van in Cardiff offers you the freedom to zip about at your own leisure.

The city benefits from ample parking - with many locations dotted around the centre. If you’re collecting anything from a specific store, be sure to check online to find the closest car park.

Cardiff is effectively divided into two by the River Taff. Various roads in the city cross the Taff to allow ease of access across the area, with the A4232 crossing it at its very widest point. The A4119, A4160 and A4161 can also be used to get from one side of the the river to the other.

The major motorway that links Cardiff to Swansea, Bridgend and Carmarthen (to the west), and Newport, Bristol and Bath (to the east) is the M4. If you’re travelling over to the Welsh capital from England, you can take the M4 westbound from London.

Cardiff is well placed to reach the rest of the country. For journeys north of the city, you’ll want to drive your hire van up the A470. It will take you all the way up to the stunning northern coastline of Wales, through the beautiful Brecon Beacons and the awe-inspiring landscapes and peaks of Snowdonia National Park. The A470 intersects the entire country and spans some 300 km from Cardiff in the south, all the way up to Llandudno in the north.

While driving in the city is mostly a pleasant experience, it’s worth noting that, just like many large cities across the UK, peak times can get rather busy. So, if you’ve got a little flexibility on journey times, it could pay to avoid rush hours.
