Driving in and around Cambridge
Key motorways in and around Cambridge
- M11 – a 55-mile-long motorway that links Cambridge and London, it passes through the Essex countryside and links to the A14 northwest of the city.
- A1(M) – can be reached via the A14 and is the main route connecting Cambridge to the north. It passes Peterborough, Lincolnshire and Leeds, toward Newcastle.
Main roads in Cambridge
- A11 – located to the east of the city, this road links the M11 to Norwich. It’s a busy route for commuters, so be aware of potential delays if travelling during busy periods.
- A14 – a major A road surrounding the north of Cambridge, it can take you through Huntingdon and toward the M11 to the south and A1(M) to the north.
- A10 – beginning just north of Cambridge, this major road goes toward London Bridge in the south and heads north to Kings Lynn. This road does get busy on weekends as people flock to the Norfolk beaches from London.
- Cambridge ring road – a useful route that comprises pre-existing roads and purpose-built sections including the A1134. It’s the best road to use if visiting the outskirts of the city.
How to get to…
Cambridge City Airport
Found toward the outskirts of the main city, Cambridge City Airport is less than three miles from the city centre. It’s accessible via the A1134 from the city centre, then by taking the A1303 along Newmarket Road, this will take you to the main terminal entrance and parking facilities.
University of Cambridge
Dropping off the student in the family should be as stress-free as possible. With the A1134 circling much of Cambridge, the van you hire will be able to get you to halls in no time. Park up at the Lion Yard car park on Pembroke Street if you’re at the old schools.
Clifton Road Industrial Estate
This Hertz location is just by the train station, perfect if you’re using the train to get to Cambridge before collecting your hire van. With good connections to the rest of the city, this prime location is easy to navigate to and from.
Cambridge Business Park
Picking up or dropping off items at Cambridge Business Park? It can be found in the Cowley Park area of the city, northeast of Central Cambridge. Simply take the A603 and A1134 out of the city centre and follow the A1309/Milton Road, before taking a right into Cowley Park to arrive.
Newmarket
The town of Newmarket is around 30 minutes away in your hire van and can be easily reached by taking the A1134 out of the Cambridge’s centre. From there, follow the A1303 for around 12 miles as it becomes the A1304, which will take you directly into the town centre.
