Driving in and around Cambridge

Cambridge is placed perfectly for access not only to London - head south on the M11 and then join the ring road until you reach the part of the capital you want to access - but also for much of the south-east and East Anglia. Even when here just for business, it’s hard not to be impressed by one of the prettiest cities in southern England.

The centre itself can be busy, and with so many students in town, there are also a lot of cyclists to be watchful for. You have a wealth of paid parking options, with plenty of park and ride sites, pay on foot multi-storey car parks and several pay-and-display car parks. You can find a handy parking map for Cambridge that highlights where they all are by following this link. There are some one-way streets and bus lanes to keep an eye on too.

In the historic centre of Cambridge, there are some pedestrian priority areas, and access is restricted to certain hours, even when loading and unloading. You won’t be able to unload in these areas between 10am and 4pm, unless you have a permit. More details can be found about these areas and permit application here.

Cambridge is served by an extensive road network, making it easy to navigate your hire van to wherever you need. The nearby town of Ely lies north-east on the A10, followed by Downham Market, Kings Lynn and then The Wash.

Newmarket is east on the A14. Keep on in the same direction on the latter for Bury St. Edmunds before swinging south-east to Ipswich. Alternatively, you can come off the A14 and join the A11 north-east, skirting Thetford Forest Park before plunging on to Norwich. The A14 also heads west from the edge of Cambridge, taking you to Huntingdon and then to Kettering and the Midlands beyond.

Whatever brings you to this pretty part of England, van hire in Cambridge is easy to organise and conveniently located.
