Isle of Mull

If you’re in search of a getaway where you can hit the beach, then the Isle of Mull won’t disappoint. With several secluded beaches to discover, you’re likely to have the place to yourself. Take a picnic, as many beaches don’t have cafés or restaurants nearby. Eas Fors waterfall and Calgary Bay are also well worth visiting.

Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park

For those in need of some solitude, head for the national park. Loch Lomond is the UK’s largest expanse of water on the mainland. If you’re a keen camper, you’ll want to make the most of the wild camping at the park. Note that due to new laws, you may need a camping permit, depending on the time of year you’re visiting and where you plan to camp: find out more here. You and your partner can gaze at each other under the impressive dark skies – Scotland has some of the most amazing dark skies in the whole of Europe with hundreds of stars visible to the naked eye on a clear night. During the day, there is plenty to do in the park, including horse riding, cruising on the loch or simply enjoying the wonderful waterfalls and scenery together.

Glencoe

For an unforgettable break, head for the hills of Glencoe. The drive from Glasgow takes just over two hours, and is well worth it for the spectacular scenery along the way. Make the most of your Hertz car while you’re here by driving a scenic route and taking in just some of the breathtaking landscape. Film fans may recognise some of the areas of Glencoe from scenes in Skyfall, Braveheart and Harry Potter.

Eilean Donan Castle

One of the most visited castles in Scotland, Eilean Donan Castle is definitely one for the road-trip bucket list. Surrounded by water where three lochs meet, the iconic castle has seen many changes since it was first inhabited in the 6th century. The castle we see today (it’s actually the fourth castle to be re-built over the years) was re-opened in 1932. You can enjoy strolling the grounds, there’s a visitor centre with tourist information on the area, coffee and gift shops and it’s the perfect location for an overnight stay if you have some extra time. Guests can stay in either the holiday cottage or the apartments overlooking the castle.
