Although Salisbury is an urban area, this city simply feels like the countryside. When you see how closely Wiltshire’s fresh green meadows and farmlands skim the city boundaries, and how quickly you can make your way into nature’s landscape upon leaving the city’s main thrust, you’ll come to appreciate why it has become such a popular tourist hotspot.
An easy city to navigate, with a wealth of fab attractions, a compelling history and a healthy array of luxury shops and restaurants, Salisbury is perfect for a long weekend of leisurely retreat.
Salisbury Cathedral and the Magna Carta
Salisbury Cathedral’s elegant spire, a late addition to the building, can be viewed from miles around. There’s been a place of worship on this site since 1220 and visitors come every day from around the globe to marvel at the medieval cloisters and stunning 13th century Chapter House.
Many come to see the original 1215 Magna Carta, which is housed within the cathedral walls. One of the most important documents ever published, the Magna Carta (or Great Charter) is, in essence, a declaration that nobody, including royalty is above the rule of the law. It is a keystone of the British constitution.
For a taste of more of England's historic backdrop, head just eight miles north of the city and visit the World Heritage Site Stonehenge – an unbeatable prehistoric monument that mystifies and enthrals visitors of all ages in equal measure.
The bustling Charter Market
The Charter Market is an authentic Salisbury institution. It has been held in the city’s very heart for centuries and is a twice-weekly gathering where you can pick up everything from locally grown fresh produce to clothing, household goods and tasty treats. As well as the Charter Market, there’s a fortnightly farmers’ market that attracts foodies from all over the county to both buy and sell tempting delicacies.
Those who enjoy a retro bargain should check out the monthly vintage market and, if you’re visiting during the festive period, don’t miss the fantastic Salisbury Christmas Market, which takes place in Guildhall Square.
A vibrant events calendar
A cheerful, open-hearted event originally staged in 1974, Salisbury International Arts is a diverse festival that sees around 150 performances and events take place every year, covering every discipline from poetry and comedy to large-scale public art commissions, dance performances and art exhibitions.
While many of the venues that host events are in the city itself, a good portion are also situated in the surrounding countryside, making the arts festival a pleasing mix of the rural and the cosmopolitan. The annual arts festival is just one of a number of festivals taking place in Salisbury each year.
Motorists should look out for the Wilton Classic and Supercar Event, keen crafters will enjoy Salisbury Contemporary Craft and Heritage Festival, and those who love to discover exciting new ingredients and meet expert foodies should time their visit to coincide with Salisbury Food and Drink Festival.
