A quick guide to Leicester

Despite its long history, much of Leicester’s city centre is new – you can blame the blitz of World War Two for that. And the redevelopment continues apace after the unearthing of Richard III’s remains. That, combined with Leicester City football club’s unlikely Premier League triumph in 2016, has delivered an injection of civic pride.

The return of Richard

Buried beneath a prosaic car park, King Richard III’s remains were long considered lost. Their unearthing and identification in 2012 has been transformative for Leicester. On the spot where he was buried there now stands a £4.5million visitor centre, which tells the history of the Plantagenet monarch, and lets you see the very place they found him.

It’s a great way to peer back into his storied life, which takes in the princes in the tower and the Battle of Bosworth, where he met his end. It’s all only a stone’s throw from Leicester Cathedral, which was recently restored for the reinterment of Richard III.

A sporting life

While many football fans will see Leicester’s claiming of the Premier League as the pinnacle of sporting achievement in the city, others may disagree. After all, this is a city that is also home to the Leicester Tigers, twice winners of Rugby Union’s European Cup and frequent champions of the English league. Speedway is also popular here, while Donington Park is a short drive away. The famous home of British motorsport, it hosts races, car shows and even music gigs.

Space Age Leicester

You might not associate Leicester with the space race, but the National Space Centre here is a great day out for stargazers and families. The Rocket Tower, soaring 42 metres up, houses the Thor Able and Blue Streak rockets, while Into Space lets you engage with life on board the International Space Station. Try out a space simulator at Tranquility Base, before visiting the Sir Patrick Moore Planetarium, the largest of its kind in the UK.

As you can see, Leicester combines futuristic attractions with heritage and history. Paired with its melting pot culture, colourful street markets and food, along with the 14th century Guildhall, it’s a place of surprises. Car hire in Leicester allows you to get around this animated city and explore the Midlands beyond, right in England’s heart.
