Driving in and around Dundee

Dundee stands in an enviable location on the north bank of the River Tay just a few miles from the sea. The city centre links directly to the Fife Peninsular to the south of the river, thanks to the Tay Road Bridge carrying the A92. This continues east of Dundee along the coast towards Carnoustie and Arbroath.

The A90 forms a dual-carriageway ring road around the north of Dundee. It heads west to Perth to meet the M90, which can whisk you down to Edinburgh, 60 miles south. The A90 also heads north from Dundee, towards Forfar and Aberdeen.

Other roads that can help you get around easily include the A991, which forms a tight ring road around the city centre, and the A85, which links the city to its airport. You’ll find that the Tay Road Bridge is the only crossing of the river between the sea and Perth, 30 miles inland.

The 1.4-mile bridge was opened in 1966 and is one of the longest road bridges in Europe. The crossing is free and one of the essential experiences of a visit to Dundee.

Driving and parking in Dundee is better than many other cities, thanks to this helpful road network and the provision of so many parking spaces by the city council.

Many streets in the very heart of Dundee are pedestrianised but around the inner ring road there are 530 on-street spaces and a ring of car parks offering around 5,000 parking spaces. This is one of the reasons Dundee has been voted the number one city in the UK for ‘car and motorist friendliness’.
