Zurich may be your destination, but there’s much more to see in this charming part of the world, and car hire at Zurich Airport allows you the freedom to go where you want to. Here are just a few things to see and do.
There’s the modern, cutting edge and hip side to Zurich, but it’s hard to resist the charms of the old town, with many picture postcard buildings dating back to the Renaissance. The Great Minster (or Grossmunster) is an iconic landmark and goes back even further. It’s rumoured that Charlemagne commissioned the original church on this site, which dates from the 12th century, while the present structure is from the 15th. You can also wander the winding streets to find Peter’s Church, or perhaps join a guided tour to learn more of the storied history of the area.
Swiss cuisine is distinct and delicious. You can go traditional at one of the many fondue restaurants, such as the Fondue Chalet on Kalanderplatz, or indulge in some vegetarian dishes at Hiltl on Sihlstrasse – opened in 1898 it was the world’s first vegetarian eaterie. For those fancying a blow out, Restaurant You at the Kameha Grand Hotel takes regional produce and introduces a Far East twist. Dishes such as river trout with pumpkin, fennel and cumquats and black rice with plum, ginger and barbecue meringue have seen it awarded a Michelin star.
The attractive city of Winterthur is only a short drive from Zurich, and combines the best elements of city and town life. Small enough to walk around, yet big enough to be lively and support a thriving culture, art and music scene. Its 17 museums cover everything from science and technology to photography as well as European art from the 14th century onwards.
Europe’s largest waterfall, the Rhine Falls make for a great day trip from Zurich. Only an hour’s drive from the city, near Schaffhausen, the sheer volume of plunging water is a feast for all the senses. Whether you choose to walk the adventure path or take a breath-taking boat ride to the basin of the falls, it’s a place of natural and ferocious beauty.
Whether you're staying in Zurich, taking in Switzerland’s other noble cities or exploring Europe, car hire at Zurich Airport is the perfect place to start.
Please note that from 15 Nov to 15 Apr many cities are required by law to restrict the circulation to only vehicles equipped with snow chains or winter tyres. For a summary of the orders, please visit www.poliziadistato.it. To comply with the regulations, in specific locations subject to this requirement, vehicles are equipped with snow chains - the price is included in the rental charges through the cost of "Winterization Fee". At pick-up if you decide to bring your own snow chains or do not intend on driving on the roads subject to this requirement, you may decline the equipment by signing the appropriate release form. This change will be reflected in the rental charges. For more information on the fees, please click here. In all other regions, we recommend that you check before renting if your journey includes one of the roads subject to this requirement and therefore request the snow chains, if necessary.
