Jorge Amado Airport is found just a couple of miles south of Ilheus’s city centre. This old seaplane terminal is now a modern passenger airport named after Jorge Amado de Faria, a popular local writer. Visitors who hire a car at Ilheus airport will be able to get around the city easily. The BA-001 highway leads from the airport on the southern peninsular to the city centre on the northern headland by crossing the Rio Cachoeira via a road bridge. The airport itself takes up the entire width of the southern peninsula, with the sea at both ends of the runway.
If you have a hire car at Ilheus Airport you’ll be able to explore the city and the surrounding area easily. Ilheus is a major tourist resort on the east coast of Brazil; the highlights are its huge selection of sandy beaches and the old Portuguese colonial architecture. The writer Jorge Amado, who gave his name to the airport, is also celebrated at his former home, which has been restored to become a popular museum. Elsewhere look out for the landmark 1930s cathedral and the historic streets of the Old Quarter. Outside the city the roads pass through miles of typical local cocoa plantations.
