Viracopos International Airport stands 12 miles southwest of the city of Campinas, in Southeast Brazil. It is sometimes called Sao Paulo Campinas Airport although the much larger city of Sao Paulo is 50 miles to the southeast. The airport occupies a flat site at the southern fringe of Campinas that's surrounded by countryside, farmland and industrial parks. Further afield the land soon gets more hilly and forested. The airport itself has a large modern terminal with plenty of parking outside. Drivers who hire a car at Viracopos Airport will find that the airport road leads to the SP-075 highway, which heads right for the city centre.
The university city of Campinas is one of the most prosperous in Brazil due to its high level of industry; however, if you hire a car from Viracopos Airport you'll also find unlikely attractions like the Santa Geneva Forest: 625 acres of pristine rainforest in the middle of the city, and full of protected wildlife; and Cambui, defined by its cobbled streets and plentiful trees along the road. Perhaps it's no surprise that the university district has the liveliest culture, with a wide range of art galleries and theatres. Campinas cathedral was built in the 19th century and is a sight to behold, while Bosque dos Jequitibas Park has a range of leisure facilities on hand.
