Benedito Lacerda Airport is the closest to the city of Macae in eastern Brazil. The airport was named after a local musician and stands four miles northeast of the city. It serves internal passenger flights and commercial helicopter trips around the nearby on- and off-shore oil platforms. Macae Airport occupies a flat area between the Rio Macae and the beach, next to the football stadium. Visitors who hire a car at Benedito Lacerda airport find that the road connections are pretty good. The airport approach road leads to the RJ-106 main coast road, which heads straight for the city centre via a bridge over the mouth of the river.
The fishing village of Macae became a tourist resort thanks to its beaches, then became a booming business city thanks to its petrol industries. By hiring a car from the airport you can easily reach the beautiful Granja Dos Cavaleiros; a stunning spot where the Imboassica Lake runs into the sea. Other visitor highlights include the old Marachal Hermes Fort and the city museum housed in a colonial-style house. Further afield, you'll find beautiful waterfalls amid the rainforest scenery, and the islands which make up the Sant Ana Archipelago just off the city; a collection of literal ‘desert islands' with gorgeous sandy shores.
