Key motorways in and around Sheffield

• M1 – connects London to Leeds and is easily accessed from the north-east of Sheffield. Take this road to reach Leeds to the north or Nottingham and Leicester to the south. It joins the A1(M) near Aberford to connect to Newcastle.
• M18 – is a motorway in Yorkshire that runs from the east of Rotherham to the M62 near Goole. It meets the A1(M) at Junction 2, known as the Wadworth interchange, and the M180 motorway at Junction 5. The middle half of the M18 is a two-lane dual carriageway, with low volumes of traffic, while the M1 to A1 section is much busier.

Main roads in Sheffield

• A61 – forms a ring road around the city centre and heads north through Sheffield’s neighbourhoods to join the M1, or south towards Chesterfield. The road is closely paralleled by the M1 between Derby and Leeds.
• A57 – forks from the A61 ring road, travelling south-east out of the city. Stay on this road to merge on to the M1 at Junction 31 or carry on to reach Worksop and the A1.
• A630 – runs between Sheffield city centre and Junction 4 of the M18, passing through Rotherham and Doncaster on the way.

Congestion Charges

Drivers of the most polluting vehicles are charged to enter Sheffield city centre, due to the Clean Air Zone (CAZ). Once the Class C Clean Air Zone is introduced, LGVs such as vans that are Euro 6 Diesel or Euro 4 Petrol will also be subject to the charge.
