Driving in and around Reading
Key motorways in and around Reading
- M4 – travels from London to South-West Wales and passes by Swindon and Bristol before crossing the Severn Bridge over to Wales. This has a lot of long-distance commuters and trucks travelling on it daily.
- A404(M) – located to the east of Reading, this road leaves the M4 at junction 8/9, and passes through western Maidenhead, before moving up towards Marlow and re-joining the M40.
- A329(M) – managed by Wokingham Borough Council rather than Highways England, this small section of motorway runs from Bracknell to Winnersh.
Main roads in Reading
- Inner Distribution Road – a ring road that serves the town centre of Reading. It also forms part of the A329, running from Wentworth to Thame.
- A4 – crosses most of the southern part of England, from Central London to Avonmouth. Known as the Bath Road, it carries traffic that does not want to use the M4 and as an alternative route when the M4 is busy.
- A33 – runs through Reading starting on the Inner Distribution Road. It connects to the M4 in the south of the town, then continues south to Basingstoke and onto the A339.
How to get to…
University Of Reading
The university can be found southwest of the centre of the town. The A327 and the Wokingham Road surround it, so there are multiple ways to get to the London Road campus. Coming from the north? You can reach it via the M40 or the A34/M4. The campus is signposted once you get into Reading and nearby halls of residence are easily found.
Reading Costco
Who can resist a bargain from Costco? Head over to the facility in Reading, situated near the Madejski Stadium and nearby our B&Q van hire location – perfect for a double pick-up of items. This Costco is on the South Oak Way, between the A33 and the M4.
Reading B&Q
B&Q is located within Reading Gate Retail Park on Acre Road, just off the A33 next to Madejski Stadium, home of Reading football club. If you’re travelling from outside the area, you can take Junction 11 off the M4 and take Basingstoke Road to reach the retail park. With a Hertz desk on site, it’s a perfect location to pick up if you’re buying DIY supplies.
University of Oxford
Dropping a relative off at the university is simple when you have a van loaded with everything they’ll need for their first student house. Take the M4 north to meet the A34 and leave at the Botley Exchange. Botley Road leads all the way into the centre of the city, so take that and continue to the main university buildings, to the east of the city.
London
If you’re travelling to the capital for a pick up or drop off, you can reach it from Reading by taking the M4 east from the south of the town. Follow past Maidenhead and Slough as you reach Greater London, where you have the option of entering the M25 ring road or continuing into Central London.
