Hertz at Newcastle

Newcastle is famed for its proud people, warm welcome and beautiful architecture. The grand sweep of Georgian buildings and impressive bridges spanning the River Tyne catch your eye, but this is also a thriving city where people come to shop and do business.

Van hire in Newcastle is made simple with pick-ups across the city, and a great collection of vans that tick all the boxes. Our smallest vans are perfect for small removals and shops, and to bolster your fleet if you’re a business with a vehicle out of action.

Move up through the sizes depending on your needs, whether you’re moving home (perhaps a student into Newcastle University), collecting furniture and white goods, or planning a DIY project.

With major branches of Wickes, B&Q, timber merchants in the city, as well as numerous shopping centres and retail parks nearby, our spacious and modern van range could be exactly what you need.

Driving in and around Newcastle

Newcastle is the gateway to the north-east. This quayside city is well-connected to the rest of the country by motorways and to other surrounding towns by A roads. If you’re considering Newcastle van hire, rest assured you have ample connections on the road network here.

The A1(M) runs south from the city. You can come off it at various junctions for Durham and Darlington before it carries on through to Leeds. From Newcastle, you’re only 15 miles from Sunderland, which is a 30-minute drive south-east on the A184.

Other key roads include the A1058 which runs north east to Tynemouth, just south of Whitley Bay. The A1 is main route north, staying close to the coast as it ventures up into Scotland. To access the west part of the country, the A69 runs just north of the Pennines and connects you with Carlisle, a major city of the borders.

In the city, Newcastle occupies the northern bank of the Tyne – cross to the south for Gateshead. The A167 and A1058 are two main routes into the centre leading from the north-west and north-east. Neville Street is one of the main thoroughfares and a focus for local shopping and the legendary nightlife.

Other popular shopping areas are found north of here, such as Eldon Square which is home to major chains including the likes of John Lewis and Argos. There are a few pedestrianised areas to watch out for, notably the shopping hub of Northumberland Street.

Parking is a combination of surface car parks and multi-storey car parks. Most council-run multi-storey car parks can be used free-of-charge after 5pm, Monday to Saturday. Height restrictions vary between them, so check ahead if you plan to use one to park your Newcastle hire van.
