Almost equidistant between the Midlands and London, Bedford is a very well connected place, and also one that is simple to navigate in a hire van. If you plan on driving to nearby towns or villages with your van, you’ll find a number of A-roads, plus you’re very close to two major motorways.
Two A-roads bisect the town itself. The A4280 running east to west, the A6 north to south. Drive east out of Bedford on the A4280, join the A421 and you’ll soon be on the A1. North of Alconbury and south of Stevenage this turns into the A1(M).
Two routes out of the town connect you with the M1 to the west. You can take the A6 south and then join the A421 west until you reach the motorway or go west on the A4280 before joining first the A422, then the A509. Once on the M1 you’re on the country’s main route connecting London in the south with Leicester, Nottingham and Leeds further north.
There are plenty of other major towns only a short drive away too, such as Northampton to the north-west on the A428, Cambridge to the east, Milton Keynes just on the other side of the M1, and Luton to the south via the A6.
Bedford itself is a compact and handsome town, with the River Ouse running through it. When it comes to parking your Bedford hire van, there is on-street metered parking available in the centre, with certain times and Sundays being free.
Several car parks are close to the main sights and shopping areas. Conveniently, the car parks at River Street, Allhallows and Lurke Street are open 24 hours a day, and the latter two are free to use after 6pm until 6am the following morning.
