The UK has many weird and wonderful traditions, and we have gathered together some of the most interesting for you to try out this Easter.

Around the world, from maypoles and Morris dancing to ‘Easter-Crime’ in Norway – where they traditionally celebrate by reading a good old-fashioned gritty crime novel - Easter can be celebrated in some unusual ways, but we think you’ll find none more eventful than this bunch.

World Coal Carrying Championships – Gawthorpe, Wakefield

What began as a spirited wager between two Gawthorpe villagers back in 1963 has today grown to be an Easter Monday tradition, as men and women take to the streets with their large sacks of coal in an effort to race for the finish and some serious prize money.

Bottle-kicking, Hallaton, Leicestershire

Two warring Leicestershire villages take to the streets each year for a game of Bottle Kicking. To win, teams go head-to-head to try to be the first to get two of three ‘bottles’ – which are actually brightly decorated and heavy kegs – across a stream and into the opposing team’s village. Hundreds of people take part and have to work together to ‘kick’ the barrels about a mile. The rules are simple: there are none. The game can go on all day - and injuries can be numerous – but it’s all in good spirits.

Pace Egg Play – Heptonstall, West Yorkshire

Back to Yorkshire for another Easter treat – the annual performance of the Pace Egg Play in Heptonstall on Good Friday. In the village square you can expect to see a courageous performance by the central St George character as he takes on all challengers, including the Black Prince of Paradine and the Bold Slasher. Join the locals in cheering on their hero, and stick around for the beautiful Hebden Valley scenery.
