From the simple joy of a perfect pastrami bagel at dinner to a glittering night at the elegant Lincoln Centre opera house, New York City is packed with major sights and experiences. And while it may be one of the world’s most famous cities - it’s also the gateway to New York State, which also offers its own memorable adventures.
NYC’s main sights are close together in the bustling central district of Manhattan. That’s where you’ll see the excitement of Times Square and the famous green spaces of Central Park. Enjoy the view from the observation deck at the top of the 102-storey Empire State Building and marvel at the architectural assortment on show, from the art deco style of the Chrysler Building to the modern blocks of the UN Headquarters.
It may not be the capital of the US government, but it’s still a popular and cultural place to visit. While you’re here, it’s easy to take in some world-class art at acclaimed galleries like the Met (Metropolitan Museum of Art) and MoMA (Museum of Modern Art). The collections are inspiring and the buildings themselves are architectural masterpieces. New York is full of music too – from a singer in a small cafe in Greenwich Village to major performances at Carnegie Hall or Radio City, there's plenty on offer to keep you entertained.
Amid the famous grid pattern of streets of skyscrapers, it’s easy to forget that Manhattan is actually a small island at the mouth of the Hudson River. Take a boat trip from Liberty State Park or Battery Park out onto the water to see the city’s skyline, or cruise out to Ellis Island and see the iconic Statue of Liberty. Even further out of the city centre, you can reach Coney Island, with its timeless amusements and seaside atmosphere, or the quieter beaches to the north and east of NYC.
From the Big Apple it’s easy to explore deeper into the State of New York. Relax on the beaches of Long Island, potter around the mansions of the Hamptons, or take a day trip to historic upstate cities like Buffalo or Albany, the state capital. And don’t forget the major natural sight at the Canadian border with New York, the incredible Niagara Falls.
