Trenton is known for its compelling past and its integral part in the American Revolution. But it also boasts a vibrant Downtown area, which is brimming with restaurants, shops and attractions.
With music events and sports games held annually in the parks, and an exciting array of interesting museums and galleries, there's so much to discover here.
Experience an eventful past
Influential in the American Revolution, there’s a lot of history to unearth around New Jersey’s capital. You can head to the foot of the Trenton Battle Monument, which honours the crucial Battle of Trenton in 1776 – at which George Washington himself was present – or visit the Old Barracks Museum in Downtown.
Located inside an old military quarter, the latter explores what life was like during the colonial period, and even gives you the chance to see re-enactments of battles in the courtyard. The authentic stone carvings are a special highlight, as they were inscribed by the soldiers who once lived in the building from 1758.
You’ll naturally be drawn to the New Jersey State House too with its golden, domed roof. Completed in 1792, stroll through the welcome centre and the elegant chambers to see where history was made.
Marvel over the stained-glass windows and the well-preserved frescoes created by renowned artist William Brantley Van Ingen, which depict New Jersey's eventful history. Outside the state house is the impressive World War II Memorial, which pays tribute to all who served during the conflict.
Stroll through the sculpture park
Grounds for Sculpture is an immersive sculpture park that’ll have you exploring the well-maintained, 42-acre woodland in search of captivating art.
There are more than 270 works here from world-renowned artists including contemporary creative J. Seward Johnson, who opened the park in 1992. He is most famous for recreating iconic photos, scenes and paintings in bronze, lifelike statues – and some of these are among the highlights.
The park blooms with more than 2,000 rose bushes and 1,000 trees. Explore to find all sorts of artistic gems hidden among the shrubbery. There are also six indoor galleries to explore too. This can all be found around 15 minutes’ drive from Downtown Trenton in neighbouring Hamilton, with free parking on site.
