Hiring a car in Bolton gives you easy access to the north-west’s patchwork quilt of towns and cities.
If you want to admire the medieval structure of Smithills Hall, drive north on the A666 until it branches off on to the A6099. This takes you straight to the historic attraction in about 15 minutes.
It's easy to drive out of Bolton town centre. Follow the A676 west to reach the M61 and east to reach Bury.
The A666, Blackburn Road, leads north through Egerton to Blackburn. Head south, and the A666 leads to a series of lush parks around the suburb of Darcy Lever, and eventually merges with the M61 near Farnworth.
Meanwhile, the B6226 connects Bolton with Doffcocker Lodge lake and Bolton Old Links Golf Club.
It takes about 35 minutes to drive from Bolton to the centre of Manchester, using the M61 to join the A580 and A6 to reach the city centre. This is a popular commuter route.
