The Slovakian capital of Bratislava lies on the western border with Austria. With the mighty Danube running through it, Bratislava mixes old world charm with modern buzz to create a city unlike any other. Its compact city centre will mean that you're not spending your day trekking on the underground, and you can spend more time enjoying the sites. Car hire in Bratislava allows you to venture to sites such as Bratislava City Gallery or one of its quaint museums such as the Museum of Clocks, or take a short drive up to the Castle where they host regular exhibitions.
Bratislava's cultural heritage spreads across many areas. One which may not be familiar with travellers is the traditional Slovak cuisine, with various top class restaurants dotted around the city you'll be spoilt for choice. Why not sample the noodle or dumpling dish of Halu'ky or cheese-filled dumplings called bryndzové pirohy. Hiring a car in Bratislava will allow you to make the drive up to the Castle, with the breath-taking view at the top, the ultimate reward for making the trip. You will be able to take in views of two different countries (neighbouring Austria & Hungary), and get cameras at the ready to snap a panoramic scene of the Danube Valley in all its glory.
Bratislava is a fantastic starting point if you're wanting to discover a bit more of Europe. Due to its close proximity to both Austria and Hungary, you can be in two different iconic cities in less than two hours. Less than an hours' journey due west on the A6 and A4 will lead you to the Austrian capital of Vienna. Less than two hours' drive south east along the Danube on the M1 is the Hungarian capital of Budapest. Spilt into Buda and Pest, this city is anything but annoying thanks to its sheer beauty and relaxed atmosphere.
