After gaining its independence in 1993 after a peaceful dissolution from Czechoslovakia, the Eastern European country of Slovakia has gone from strength to strength as both a country and a tourist destination. Slovakia is the perfect place for lovers of off-piste action, with its snow-capped mountains and crisp snow perfect for both beginners and experts alike. Its capital, Bratislava, is amongst one of the most stunning cities in Europe, and yet this gem remains largely free of the typical tourist amenities in many of Europe's major cities. Bratislava Castle is set on a hill looking over the city and it contains the first written reference to Bratislava from 907 AD.
Hiring a car in Slovakia allows you to travel the country and visit all its wonderful cities. Bratislava's Action Park is perfect for adrenaline junkies. Situated 15km outside the city, Action Park offers adventure hunters 26 activities to get the blood pumping, including Action Tower, where bungee jumpers can experience 3.8 seconds of freefall from the 110m tower!
It's worth hiring a car in Slovakia and exploring its other cities. Kosice, which was named the European Capital of Culture in 2013, contains some unique architecture such as The Lower Gate and The Shire Hall, which is now home to the East Slovak Gallery.
When driving in Slovakia it is a requirement that you carry a warning triangle, first aid kit, spare bulbs, a tow rope and a spare wheel. It is also recommended by the Slovakian government that you carry a fire extinguisher, reflective vests and a torch. There is also zero tolerance on drink driving in Slovakia.
