Driving in and around York

York

York’s quaint, cobbled streets are ideally situated for access to nearby cities including Leeds, Sheffield, Hull and Bradford, as well as larger towns such as Harrogate. In fact, the whole of Yorkshire is at your fingertips.

Hire a van in York and you’ll find that two A-roads encircle the city. The A1237 runs along the western outskirts from the south-west to the north-east, connecting in both corners with the A64, which runs along the east. A-roads spread in all directions – you can take the A64 south-west or the A50 north-east to get onto the A1(M), the nearest motorway. That runs north to Newcastle and south past Leeds to Doncaster.

Much of York centre has been pedestrianised, with certain streets (called ‘footstreets’) closed to all traffic between 10.30am and 5pm, seven days a week. You can find out exactly which streets here. Additionally, Minster Yard and Deangate are closed to vehicles 24 hours a day, as is the Shambles, although you can load from 5.30pm to 10.30am.

Rent a van in York and you can head south via the A64 to nearby Leeds - increasingly a northern powerhouse for business, culture and restaurants, with other thriving cities in proximity, including Huddersfield and Wakefield. The A64 also goes north-east, past Kirkham Abbey, Malton and Eastfield before ending at Scarborough on the Yorkshire coast.

For access to Hull, follow the A64 ring road and come off for the A1079, driving south-east. You’ll pass through Pocklington, Market Weighton and Beverley before you come to Hull, sitting proud on the Humber.

You can also take your hire van onto the A19, with Selby lying to the south and Thirsk, Middlesbrough and Sunderland to the north. York really is an ideal location for van hire with all of these places reached easily and in comfort. And, if you get some time off, you can even take in the York Dungeon, wander the Shambles, visit the imperious York Minster or even have a day at the races.
