Preston’s location opens up the entirety of Lancashire and the north-west to you. From here you’re only a short drive from Manchester, the Yorkshire Dales or the Lake District, while Blackpool, Liverpool and the UK’s western coast are in easy reach.
The city sits on or near a number of motorways, with the M6 leading north to south just on Preston’s eastern fringe. Take it north and you’ll pass by dozens of towns and villages on your way to Lancaster and Carlisle, bisecting both the Dales and the Lake District. Take it south and you’ll get to Wigan, Stoke-on-Trent and, eventually, Birmingham.
For Manchester, you can join the M61 on the outskirts of the city and head south-east via Chorley, passing Bolton as you go. East lies Blackburn, via the A59 and A677, while going west on the A583 will take you to the traditional seaside resort of Blackpool. There are a couple of routes to Liverpool, the most direct being the A59 via Ormskirk. Alternatively, you can take the coastal route, the A565, which passes through Southport.
Preston’s compact centre is straightforward to find your way round, with the main routes being the A6, Blackpool Road and, on the southern edge, the A59. Just south of the A59 you’ll discover the city’s Guild Hall, St George’s Shopping Centre and train station, while north of it, next to Moor Lane and the A583, is the University.
One of the places where van hire in Preston really comes in useful is at the Capital Trade Park, south of the River Ribble on the A6/Victoria Road. With furniture and electronic shops, that extra space will come in handy. In the west, on the A583, there are plenty of large stores – a DFS, a Bensons for Beds – in the lively Marina area. And, once you’ve got all your moving or shopping done, park up and take advantage of the cinema and restaurants here.
