Driving in and around Brighton

Driving a van around Brighton couldn’t be simpler. You might only be 50 miles from London, but you’ll feel a world away from the congestion and bustle of the capital. It’s a small city, however, so it’s worth being aware of the one-way systems, bus and cycle lanes - so there can be some mild traffic issues at peak times and in high season.

Much of the road system is simplicity itself to navigate. The London Road - or A23 - heads out through the north of the city and onward through Hickstead and Handcross to Crawley before you take the M23 on into the suburbs of London.

Running along the coastline is the A259, which runs west to nearby Hove and Worthing before moving slightly inland for Goring-By-Sea, East Preston, Wick and, eventually, Chichester. Take the eastern route instead and you’ll pass by Brighton Marina and on to the suburbs of Rottingdean and Saltdean. You’ll then hit Newhaven, with the River Ouse meeting the English Channel here - it’s a port town with ferries to Dieppe in France. The A259 continues on from there to Eastbourne, before coming to an end in Folkestone in the south-east - meaning Brighton is wonderfully served by roads if your van hire is going to take in a number of seaside towns.

The A27, inland at the north-end of Brighton centre, is a great way to traverse either east or west while avoiding the suburbs. It’s the fast track to Lewes, Polegate and Pevensey in the east, and Shoreham-By-Sea, Arundel and Chichester to the West.

If you need to park up while hiring a van, there’s a great choice of council run car parks across the city, both near the coast and further into the town. You can find an official map of their location online.

If you have time and you’re visiting Brighton for the first time, you should also visit the Marina, park up and saunter down the waterfront and also wander the charming area called ‘The Lanes’. For all your van hire needs in Brighton, Hertz has you covered.
