Next door to the famed Jurassic Coast, Bournemouth is a compact and well-laid out town known for its fine Victorian centre and the warm welcome it gives to holidaying visitors. But it’s not just a tourist hot spot – nearly 200,000 people live here.
Two major A roads serve the town, the A338 running to the east, the A35 to the west. The former runs north-east and skirts the western side of the New Forest before it reaches Salisbury. The latter takes you to Dorchester and then on into Dorset and Devon. Roads in and out of the town are usually relatively quiet, although they do grow more congested during the summer swell.
For the nearby resort of Poole, drive west on the A35 and then join the B3066 south-west. Boscombe and its pier are to the east, along a coastal drive that will also take you to Christchurch and Highcliffe Castle.
Parking is ample, both on-street and in car parks. The council maintains a useful list and map of all their car parks as well as some private ones, both in Bournemouth and in the surrounding area. You can access it online.
Bournemouth Airport is about six miles from the city, reached via the A338. Several key industrial estates and business parks are situated here, including Aviation Business Park.
If you’ve arranged Bournemouth van hire for shopping, there are a trio of shopping centres where your spacious vehicle will come in handy. Richmond Gardens, The Arcade and The Avenue are the main spots near the town centre, while Dolphin Shopping Centre in nearby Poole boasts some 140 retailers. Castlepoint Shopping Park, on Castle Lane West, is one of the UK’s largest, and has branches of Argos, B&Q and Bathstore – all retailers where a van is very useful. There’s plenty of parking onsite too.
