The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the iconic sights of San Francisco. Built in 1937, the suspension bridge spans the mile-wide entrance to San Francisco Bay and has become one of the west coast's most photographed landmarks. If you visit the Golden Gate Bridge, start at the pavilion on the south side - you'll find a visitor centre where you can join free guided tours, discover the history of the bridge and buy souvenirs. Visitors can walk or cycle across the bridge from here, or for the less energetic, it's a good spot to sit and gaze at the structure often called ‘the world's most beautiful bridge'.
