Historic Roots
Live and breathe Liverpool's deep-rooted history with a visit to Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre. Eccentric philanthropist, Joseph Williamson, paid destitute soldiers returning from the Napoleonic War to dig a labyrinth of tunnels underground.
Williamson spent 70 years overseeing the project, keeping no record of how far they stretch and in what directions. After Williamson's death in 1840, work on the tunnels ground to a halt and fell into disrepair.
Today, volunteers in Liverpool are giving up free time to clear the mysterious tunnels lurking in Liverpool's Edge Hill area. It's a fascinating place to explore a snippet of the city's history.
One-off Shops
Hip and happening shopping centre Grand Central Hall, is bursting with bric-a-brac stalls and curiosity shops. Rummage through the clothing rails and vintage record collections in colourful splendour - this Grade II listed building is a place of discovery situated in central Liverpool.
The alternative indoor market was once held in the Palatine Market, which was sadly demolished in 2007 in an attempt to move Liverpool's shopping districts into the centre.
Hidden Gems
Tucked away in the leafy suburbs of Mossley Hill is hidden gem Sudley House where tourists will find an impressive collection of Victorian art in a stunning setting.
Sudley house is nestled in beautiful woodland which overlooks the river Mersey - the mansion is located in Mossley Hill, one of Liverpool's most celebrated districts, largely due to The Beatle's hit song 'Penny Lane', which is a street in the area.
Wartime History
Gain a true insight into the Battle of the Atlantic with the Western Approaches, Imperial War Museum. Housed in a bomb-proof underground bunker at the heart of Liverpool's business district - the museum is a must-see for history buffs, and depicts the life of WW2 preserved exactly as it was.
