You'll find El Paso in the far west of the state of Texas, just a few miles north of the US-Mexican border, which divides the area from the city of Juarez. If you hire a car from El Paso you can explore the whole of this expansive region. Together they form an enormous urban area with more than 2.7 million inhabitants, and both cities operate in the US Mountain Time Zone, standing at more than 1,000 meters above sea level. The scenic Franklin Mountains range extends right into El Paso itself.
Hiring a car gives you the best chance of fully exploring El Paso and its surroundings of mountains and desert. The Franklin Mountains State Park is a good place to start. You can easily drive into the mountains here and you'll find the Park is popular for outdoor sports, adventures, walks and picnics. There are great views across the city in the Park, especially from the spectacular Wyler Aerial Tramway. Elsewhere, it's interesting to see the border with Mexico and there's even a museum of the US border patrols here. Look out too for the museums of railroads, archaeology and art.
