Belfast Way, Loch Ryan Port
**(Calls cost 7p per minute plus your phone company's access charge)
On the shores of Loch Ryan in Wigtownshire Southwest Scotland, is the rustic town of Stranraer - a settlement with a documented history stemming from the 14th century, although the town is said to have Roman origins. Here you will find a strong maritime heritage linked to the port, as well as fittingly attractive rural scenery. To explore beyond the town, you can hire a car from Stranraer at Cairnryan Port. A short drive away is Castle Kennedy Gardens which boasts, amongst other attractions, a giant lily pond.
Hiring a car from Stranraer will give you the easiest access to Dunskey Gardens, a beautiful example of a walled garden with 19th century glasshouses and a welcoming tearoom; a great location for watching the world go by. Enthusiastic drivers will enjoy taking the Old Military Road southwest; an enjoyable route with excellent scenery, when conditions are kind. Glenluce Abbey, a weathered Cistercian monastery that was founded in the 12th century is another spectacle most easily reached by renting a car from Stranraer. Be sure to visit the Museum of Monastic life while you are there to get a further insight into the Abbey.

Please note that from 15 Nov to 15 Apr many cities are required by law to restrict the circulation to only vehicles equipped with snow chains or winter tyres. For a summary of the orders, please visit www.poliziadistato.it. To comply with the regulations, in specific locations subject to this requirement, vehicles are equipped with snow chains - the price is included in the rental charges through the cost of "Winterization Fee". At pick-up if you decide to bring your own snow chains or do not intend on driving on the roads subject to this requirement, you may decline the equipment by signing the appropriate release form. This change will be reflected in the rental charges. For more information on the fees, please click here. In all other regions, we recommend that you check before renting if your journey includes one of the roads subject to this requirement and therefore request the snow chains, if necessary.
