Visby Airport is the gateway to the Swedish Baltic holiday island of Gotland. The airfield stands about two miles north of the capital Visby, close to the sandy beaches of the west coast of the island. The airport runway occupies flat land between two golf courses and neat farms. The modern terminal has restaurants and shops, and is built to handle the rush of summer visitors. There's a choice of parking options outside too. If you collect a hire car here you'll find that the National Route 149 leads directly south to the leafy suburbs of Visby or north along the coast.
If you have a hire car it's worth driving down to Visby from the airport, which has been designated a World Heritage City. At first the northern half of the city looks modern and ordinary but further south you'll find the medieval fortified walled old quarter. This contains almost 100 restored medieval churches. Get a true taste of medieval life when you wonder the cobblestone streets and freely view the many 13th-century buildings located here. Visit Visby and you'll notice its fairy-tale appearance. It's perfect for relaxing at the roadside cafes and quaint art shops. Further afield, the island of Gotland offers both old wooden fishing villages and modern sandy tourist beaches.
