The world heritage city of Visby is the capital of the Swedish island of Gotland, about 50 miles from the mainland. Visby stands on the west coast of the popular Baltic holiday island, which measures around 110 miles long and 32 miles wide. Almost all island visitors arrive via the city and hiring a car in Visby is the best way to see the rest of the island and its attractions. These range from almost 100 restored medieval churches to awe-inspiring limestone pillars standing in the sea. Visitors enjoy both tiny old wooden fishing villages and modern sandy tourist beaches.
