Kristianstad stands almost at the southern tip of Sweden. It's a few miles inland from Hano Bay but like many Swedish cities is surrounded by lakes like Hammersjon and Araslovssjon. In fact much of the city is below sea level and has to be protected by elaborate flood defences. Those who hire a car in Kristianstad will be able to tour this eastern part of Skane. The highlights of the area include the pretty medieval coastal town of Ahus, Bäckaskog Castle and Gardens, and the grand Karsholm Castle on the shore of Lake Oppmannasjon.
Start with the city's original renaissance Church of the Holy Trinity, built by King Christian IV of Denmark. It is often rated one of the most beautiful in northern Europe. If you hire a car in Kristianstad you can get further afield too. For example, the Naturum Vattenriket is an acclaimed family wildlife attraction with trails and simulators, while the Swedish Artillery Museum marks the city's former role as an army garrison town. The heart of Kristianstad is now a pedestrian area but when touring the streets by car it's possible to spot many of the most historic buildings, including one of the original stone gates to the city.
