The southeast corner of Iceland contains a complex geological feature; a peninsula surrounded by sand bars, lagoons and islands. The Hornafjordur Airport serves this spot as well as the nearest town, Hofn, which is three miles south at the tip of the headland. The area stands at the foot of the Vatnajökull Glacier, Europe's biggest. This forms part of the Skaftafell National Park, also one of Europe's largest. Visitors can hire a car in Hofn to explore the amazing scenery of beaches, glaciers, mountains and islands here. Hofn is connected to National Road 1 by a long tunnel carrying Road 99. From here it's a long drive to Reykjavik - a total of 285 miles.
Hofn is a small fishing town almost surrounded by the sea that has become a popular tourist destination thanks to its astounding location. If you hire a car in Hofn you will be able to tour the town and its immediate vicinity easily. There's a popular swimming pool in the centre that includes an ice bath and water slides, a busy harbour, a folk museum, and plenty of opportunities for both boat and walking tours. Try also to find the local rock formations known as The Dwarf Crags or the intriguing Glacier Museum.
