Villingen-Schwenningen is on the eastern edge of the Black Forest in southwest Germany, and is made up of two smaller towns which were merged in the 197s. Though they now form one city, the two halves look distinctly different.
The area is well known for watchmaking, and the first watches were made in Villingen-Schwenningen in 1858 - watchmaking is still one of the biggest industries in the city today. The two towns, plus the closeness of the Black Forest, mean that it is a good idea to hire a car in Villingen-Schwenningen to get around more easily.
Villingen-Schwenningen is an interesting place, with a lot of sights to see. Because of the city's history of watchmaking, the jewel in the crown is the Schwenningen Clock Museum, which contains working clock making machinery, and visitors can see a clock being made.
The city also has an impressive church, and an art gallery; for those who enjoy old architecture the old town wall is also well worth seeing. The city's different attractions are quite spread out, so hiring a car in Villingen-Schwenningen is the best option for getting around, particularly if you want to drive out and see some of the Black Forest.
