Münster-Osnabrück Airport stands midway between these two cities in northwest Germany. It occupies a flat strip of countryside surrounded by woods and farmland to the west of the Dortmund-Ems Canal and the E37/A1 motorway. The regional airport has a modern two-level passenger terminal and parking for 7,500 cars, including two multi-storey parks. Immediately to the north are rivers, lakes and a small nature reserve. To the west is the small town of Greven. Visitors who hire a car from Münster-Osnabrück Airport will find that the E37/A1 motorway leads northeast to Osnabrük (20 miles away) or southwest to Munster (16 miles away). The airport also connects with the A340 east-to-west motorway.
If you pick up a hire car at Münster-Osnabrück Airport you'll find either of its cities are fairly easy to reach thanks to the A1 motorway. Whichever way you drive it's hard to miss that this is essentially a traditional rural area and both cities are surrounded by pretty farmland and quiet leafy villages. Münster itself is built round an historic market square. Its tourist highlights include the Pablo Picasso Museum, the 13th-century cathedral and astronomical clock, a fortress, botanic garden and plenty of gothic and baroque landmarks. Osnabrück has a similar list of attractions, including a castle, monastery and 11th-century cathedral. Both have charming old streets to wander and plenty of pavement cafes to relax in.
