South of Hamburg, Lueneburg is situated between the Elbe Valley and the Lüneburg Heath. The city has close associations with the salt industry, explaining the prominence of the Salt Museum and the hot salt springs, available for use in SaLu Waterpark. The spires of St John and St Michael dominate the skyline, and a walk along the Old Harbour clearly demonstrates the city's heritage. Car hire in Lueneburg is popular due to nearby attractions such as Luneburg Heath. Hiring a car in Lueneburg is available from the Railway Station, In der Marsch and both of Hamburg's main Airports.
A trip up Luneburg's famous Water Tower (Wasserturm), is recommended to get your bearings. The Altstadt is where most of Luneburg's charms are located - St Michael's Church, St Johns, the Rathaus, the Salt Museum and the Old Harbour - but for those who like to explore, hiring a car in Lueneburg is greatly advised. The Sülzwiese car park is amongst many first rate parking facilities lying just outside the city centre, and those who rent a car in Lueneburg, might well wish to visit Hamburg (just over 40mins drive using the A39). Lueneburg Heath is about the same distance west on the K20, and historic Bardowick is just a 10 minute drive.
