Bremen Airport is only a couple of miles outside the city of Bremen, which is one of the most populated cities in Germany. It is a base for Ryanair, so you can get a cheap flight there, and if you hire a car at Bremen Airport then you can be in the city in a matter of minutes. Bremen Airport was the site of the first experimental flights in 1910, so the area has long ties with aviation. Bremen is in an interesting geographical location, as it is not far from the North Sea, and has been settled by humans for around 14000 years.
The modern city of Bremen has been there for over 1000 years, and the general area has been populated for over ten times that. It was originally a market town, and the Town Hall is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you hire a car from Bremen Airport, then you can drive down to the Schnoor Quarter, which is the very oldest part of the town. The city is the subject of many tales and legends, including one about the town musicians, who can still be heard thanking people when they throw a coin down the Hole of Bremen.
Bremen is a beautiful town, but there are also a lot of fascinating places nearby. Having access to a car is a good idea if you want to get out and about and visit places like Bremerhaven, which has great views of the city, an old lighthouse, a maritime museum and a marine zoo. A few miles outside the city is the sleepy Fischerhude, which is mainly green countryside, leafy forest and sandy tracks that are great for cycling. Oldenburg is not far away – the city has a rich history, and still produces some of the finest sports horses around.
