The East German town of Bamberg lies just 63km North of Nuremberg on the river Regnitz, close to its confluence with the Main. In 17 Henry II, Duke of Bavaria, became king and tried to make Bamberg the seat of the Bishopric, intending it to become a 'second Rome'.
