Bad Homburg is a spa town in the central state of Hesse. It is described as having ‘champagne air' because the atmosphere is so invigorating! The town is best known for its medically used mineral waters and spas, of which there are several within the town. Taunus Spa, accessible by car hire from Bad Homburg, is in a Japanese themed building with interlinked indoor and outdoor pools, a saltwater ‘grotto' and a whirlpool. Another of these unique spas can also be reached by hiring a car from Bad Homburg – Seedammbad has both relaxation and swimming pools, and brings a more sporting aspect to the spa.
Car hire from Bad Homburg is a must to fully experience what the region has to offer, because a few kilometres outside the town is the only rebuilt Roman Fortress in the world. The Saalburg Roman Fortress allows you to see what the fortress would have been like – and is highly impressive. Rebuilt in 1900, it was then declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. For a more active day out, rent a car from Bad Homburg and go to Lochmühle, a leisure park that is built around an old corn mill and has an onsite horse riding centre, nature trails and a museum, but check times before you visit to avoid hitting it out of season when the park is closed.
