Karratha is a coastal town in Western Australia, at the centre of the Pilbara Coast. The town acts as a gateway to the Dampier Archipelago and is surrounded by National Parkland including Karijini. Amenities here are excellent and the shopping centre of Karratha is somewhat renowned. Car hire in Karratha is popular for sights like the famous Burrup Peninsula, which has some of the most striking cave art in the world courtesy of the ancient civilisations that roamed the area. Hiring a car in Karratha is available from Karratha Airport and locations throughout Western Australia.
Visitors tend to share their time between Karratha, the National Parks, the Dampier Peninsula and Port Hedland, meaning that hiring a car in Karratha is a good option. The Millstream-Chichester National Park is immediately due south, and Karijini National Park is further again. Closer to home though is Dampier - 20 minutes on the Dampier Highway. Rent a car in Karratha and head to Dampier then stray north towards the peak of the Burrup Peninsula where you'll find the renowned Hearsons Cove. The Burrup Peninsula is also home to some of the oldest and finest rock engravings ever discovered, providing a haunting link back to our early ancestors.
If you're staying in Karratha, there's a good chance you might be on your way to Karijini National Park - home to sights such as Hancock Gorge, the spectacular Oxer Lookout, and Mount Bruce (Western Australia's second highest mountain). The Millstream-Chichester National Park is closer to Karratha and may be more achievable by car. Port Hedland is a two and a half hours drive up the coast on National Route 1, and a pleasant town in its own right - here you'll find the Cape Keraudren Nature Reserve. The Harding River Dam near Roebourne is also popular for the stunning views of the Pilbara region.
