Mount Isa is in Queensland, in an area known as the Gulf Country. It is rich in minerals, and there is a mine in Mt Isa, which is one of the most productive single mines in the world. The town is in a dry area of the outback, but it has its own artificial lake which supplies water - Lake Moondarra. Car hire in Mt Isa is a good idea for those wanting to see the lake, as it is 19km out of the city centre, on the Leichhardt River, which is a good area for water sports. Hiring a car in Mt Isa is also good for exploring the surrounding area.
One of the biggest attractions in Mount Isa is the Underground Hospital, which was among the first of its kind, and was used to treat soldiers during the Second World War. It is the only surviving underground building in Queensland from that time. It's also worth hiring a car here to go and see the Outback Park, which has a lagoon and waterfall, and is a great spot for a picnic. You can also get over to the Hard Times Mine by renting a car in Mt Isa, which is a unique experience about what it's really like to work in a mine.
Just outside the centre of Mount Isa is the Riversleigh Fossil Centre. Australia contains some of the oldest landscapes in the world, and so there are a lot of fossils to be found. The centre displays some of the finds that have been uncovered in the area, and lets you have a go dusting down on your own fossil find. The Camooweal Caves National Park is two hours' drive from Mount Isa - you can go camping and fishing there, but be aware that this is a remote place, and it's recommended to let someone know when you plan to return.
