Mudgee is a historic town in New South Wales, which has a lot going for it. There's a lot to see in the city, and loads of outdoor activities in the surrounding area, including exploring alpaca farms, so car hire in Mudgee is recommended. The scenery around Mudgee is amazing. As well as having a lot of historic buildings, if you take just a 19km drive out of the city you will reach Frog Rock, a natural stone formation (that looks like a frog) on the side of Cassilis Road, so hiring a car in Mudgee is essential.
The Australian sky is huge - miles and miles of uncluttered space in which the stars of the southern hemisphere glitter like diamonds. That's why hiring a car in Mudgee is a good idea in order to get over to the Mudgee Observatory and see space up close. Many places in South West Wales are famous for breeding horses, and it's worth renting a car to go to the Mudgee Racecourse. There are several race meets every year, but the racecourse is in a beautiful location, with amazing views of the town, the hills and mountains around it.
A short drive away from Mudgee is the Wollemi National Park, where you can go kayaking on the Cudgegong River - it's nice and calm, so don't worry about having to survive a white water experience - and watch the landscape glide by. If you're more history than sport, then a little way out of town by car is the village of Gulgong, which has been extensively photographed due to its idyllic appearance. It houses a museum of sight and sound, about the history of film making, and another museum of mining equipment and horse drawn vehicles - Gulgong is a fascinating day out for anyone interested in the evolution of industry.
